Nobody drew you a map.

You were handed a due date, a registry, and a list of things to buy. No one told you that becoming a mother is also a developmental crossing, as real as adolescence, with its own stages and its own losses. The word for it is matrescence. Most mothers never hear it.

The Missing Map gives you that word, and then it gives you the territory. Jamilia Shani walks you through the six stages of the Matrescent Path: Pre-Motherhood, Threshold, Initiation, Disorientation, Integration, and Expansion. Along the way she names what mothers feel and rarely say. The grief for the woman you were. The fog. The love and the loss arriving at once. The moment you look in the mirror and wonder who she is.

Inside, you will find:

  • A clear language for what you are living, so you can stop mistaking a passage for a failure
  • The six stages of the Matrescent Path, with the landmarks mothers meet along the way
  • The maps you were handed (perfect motherhood, bouncing back, having it all) and why they never fit
  • The deeper crossings: the second child, the mother who crosses borders, the becoming that has no baby, and the loss of the village
  • Night chapters for the 3 a.m. hours, when you most need company
  • Notes and a bibliography, so the research behind the book is easy to find

This is not a book of rules, and it will not tell you how to do motherhood correctly. It is a companion for the way through, written for the mother in the middle of it and for the people who love her.

You were never lost.

You were traveling without a map.

Who are you becoming?
