About
Jamilia Shani
A life’s work in service of the mother herself.

Jamilia Shani is a writer, maternal technology designer, and birth and postpartum doula whose work focuses on maternal development.
Her work asks what happens to the mother herself. It is not only about how she cares for a child. It is about how she grows, changes, grieves, and becomes, across motherhood and across a lifetime.
She has worked alongside mothers since 2016, as a birth and postpartum doula. That work, and her own years of writing and independent study, led her to Maternal Development: the study of the mother herself as a developing human being. Jamilia is currently studying psychology and training in midwifery.
She is the author of The Missing Map: On Matrescence and the Making of a Mother, the founder of Forpartum and Propartum Institute, and the creator of Partum Music.
